St. Kathrein Thermal Spa – Families, Health & Relaxation

The St. Kathrein Thermal Spa is the counterpart to the Römerbad—and in many ways the hidden gem of Bad Kleinkirchheim. Named after the historic St. Catherine’s Church, which stands right next to the thermal spa, it boasts the largest water area of any thermal spa in Carinthia and combines a modern family experience with a traditional healing spa.

St. Kathrein is the top choice for families with children: The 86-meter-long water slide is a hit with kids of all ages, while the lovingly designed “Badewandl” —a separate toddler pool with warm water and gentle water attractions—keeps even the youngest guests happy. Parents can relax and watch from the poolside while the children play. Outside, the spacious sun deck with a view of the Nockberge Mountains invites you to relax—a true delight in the summer.

The wellness area features a variety of saunas, including a bio sauna, a Finnish sauna, and the unique Swiss stone pine relaxation room. This relaxation area is crafted entirely from fragrant Swiss stone pine—a type of wood native to Carinthia that has been proven to calm the heart rate and improve sleep quality. The calm, relaxed atmosphere makes this area the perfect retreat after an active day on the mountain or by the lake.

There is a special focus on health and wellness: St. Kathrein features its own wellness and health center offering physical therapy treatments and massages. The mineral-rich thermal water is specifically used here for therapeutic baths and medical treatments. Those suffering from chronic back pain, joint problems, or stress-related symptoms will find professional care and the right therapeutic options in St. Kathrein.

The indoor hot tub is another highlight: powerful massage jets relieve tension, while the warm thermal water relaxes the muscles. Especially after a long day of skiing or a long hike, it’s a well-deserved sense of well-being.

Healing thermal water – for over 1,000 years

The history of the thermal waters in Bad Kleinkirchheim back to the early Middle Ages. Around the year 1000 AD, believers built a small church at the site of the hot springs—later known as St. Catherine’s Church, which still stands today right next to the St. Kathrein Thermal Spa and is open to visitors. It is one of the oldest pilgrimage churches in Carinthia and stands as a testament to how long people have valued the power of the warm water here.

The thermal water rises from a depth of over 1,000 meters and emerges at a natural temperature of around 36 °C. It is rich in minerals and trace elements —including calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, and sulfate. Over the course of thousands of years, as it travels through the rock of the Nockberge Mountains, it becomes enriched with these valuable substances.

Its effectiveness in treating musculoskeletal conditions—particularly muscle tension, joint pain, and rheumatic ailments—is medically recognized. The thermal water has also been used for centuries to treat stress-related exhaustion, skin problems, and respiratory conditions. The Therme St. Kathrein makes targeted use of this healing water in its spa and wellness facilities for therapeutic treatments.

The water quality is regularly tested by independent laboratories and is considered one of the purest thermal springs in Austria. What visitors particularly appreciate: The water feels soft and leaves the skin feeling pleasantly velvety—a difference you notice immediately if you’re used to ordinary tap water or chlorinated swimming pools.

A visit to the thermal baths in Bad Kleinkirchheim therefore not just a way to relax, but a genuine form of preventive healthcare. This is precisely why many of our regular guests keep coming back—because after a week of thermal water, they experience noticeably fewer ailments and feel more energetic overall. In particular, the combination of exercise in the fresh mountain air (skiing, hiking, cycling) followed by regeneration in the thermal water has an effect that simply cannot be achieved in everyday life.
